Bij Solopress vieren we een van 's werelds belangrijkste uitvindingen met een reeks korte films over verschillende lettertypes.<\/p>\n<p>Deze video behandelt 5 dingen die je misschien niet weet over Helvetica:<strong><br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"youtube-embed\" data-video_id=\"315C6s5zrCo\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lettertype Helvetica - 5 dingen die je misschien niet wist | Gepresenteerd door Solopress\" width=\"696\" height=\"392\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/315C6s5zrCo?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/www.solopress.com\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><strong>Helvetica<\/strong> is waarschijnlijk het populairste lettertype op aarde, na zijn uitvinding in 1957 door Max Meidinger en Eduard Hoffman in de Haas Type Foundry, Zwitserland.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-22401 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Hass-Type-Foundry.jpg\" alt=\"Hass Type Gieterij\" width=\"650\" height=\"350\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Oorspronkelijk heette het Neue Haas Grotesk, maar al snel werd het omgedoopt tot Helvetica, naar de Latijnse naam van het thuisland. Zwitserland gebruikt het lettertype als kenmerk - alle overheidsdocumenten worden bijvoorbeeld in Helvetica gedrukt.<\/p>\n<p>Het werd al snel door bedrijven over de hele wereld gebruikt als woordmerk en logo. Vandaag de dag gebruiken meer dan 40 wereldwijde bedrijven het als onderdeel van hun logo, waaronder 3M, BMW, Lufthansa, Jeep en American Apparel. American Apparel is zelfs een van de meest opvallende gebruikers van het lettertype. Ze gebruiken de strakke en eenvoudige letters meestal boven controversi\u00eble beelden (zoals te zien is in deze advertentie hieronder).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-22400 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/American-Apparel-Ad.jpg\" alt=\"Amerikaanse kledingadvertentie\" width=\"650\" height=\"350\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Het meest iconische gebruik van het lettertype kwam in 1980, toen de MTA (Metropolitan Transit Authority) de vermoeide en verwarrende bewegwijzering van de New Yorkse metro wilde veranderen, die op dat moment bestond uit een wirwar van verschillende lettertypes en stijlen. Alle bewegwijzering in de New Yorkse metro, voltooid in 1989, is nu consistent met het iconische gebruik van witte letters op een zwarte achtergrond en de eenvoudige gekleurde cirkels voor het weergeven van verschillende lijnen.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-22404 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/New-York-Subway-Sign.jpg\" alt=\"New York metro bord\" width=\"650\" height=\"350\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Zoals alle beroemde historische figuren kreeg Helvetica zijn eigen doorbraak in Hollywood in 2007 met een eigen documentaire film over de geschiedenis van het lettertype geregisseerd door Gary Hustwitt. De film werd gemaakt ter gelegenheid van de 50e verjaardag van Helvetica en onderzocht de voor- en nadelen van het lettertype vanuit het perspectief van ontwerpers. Hoewel het geen grote kaskraker was die overal in de bioscopen draaide, kreeg de film na vertoning op het South by Southwest Festival in 2007 lovende kritieken.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-22402 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/Helvetica-Film.jpg\" alt=\"Helvetica Film\" width=\"650\" height=\"350\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Maar met roem komt ook haat, dus sommige ontwerpers houden gewoon niet van Helvetica.
