{"id":62831,"date":"2019-07-29T08:30:05","date_gmt":"2019-07-29T07:30:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/?p=62831"},"modified":"2023-03-17T16:36:01","modified_gmt":"2023-03-17T16:36:01","slug":"who-invented-business-cards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/print-inspiration\/who-invented-business-cards\/","title":{"rendered":"Who invented Business Cards?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div><p>For hundreds of years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/business-cards\/\">Business Cards<\/a> have been an integral marketing tool for tradespeople and commerce.<\/p>\n<p>From the earliest <strong>origins in ancient China<\/strong> to the beginnings of what could be called recognisable Business Card design in Victorian times.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re tracing the history of the Business Card and explaining how it rose from humble beginnings to become a staple of companies and professionals worldwide.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>When was the Business Card invented?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Business Card has roots dating back as far as 15th century China, according to this article in the Economist.<\/p>\n<p>The ancient Chinese used these primitive cards to <strong>let people know they were coming<\/strong> in advance of arriving at their home or place of work. This suggests the earliest Business Cards were used in the same way we use <strong>WhatsApp and Facebook messages<\/strong> today \u2013 as courtesy calls ahead of visiting a friend or an acquaintance.<\/p>\n<p>They were also used \u2013 more formally \u2013 to announce <strong>visiting royalty<\/strong>. These cards, produced ahead of a royal visit, were known as <strong>Meshi.<\/strong> They were presented with ceremonies still found in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/business-marketing\/global-business-card-etiquette\/\">Business Card etiquette<\/a> in contemporary China.<\/p>\n<p>Even today, the card is held with both hands <strong>between the thumb and forefinger<\/strong>\u00a0and passed to the other person, who receives it in the same fashion.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>When did Business Cards start being widely used?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The arrival of what became known as \u2018trade cards\u2019 in 17<sup>th<\/sup> century England saw square pieces of paper or card being used to advertise goods or services.<\/p>\n<p>Merchants handed out trade cards, holding information including the <strong>business name, services provided<\/strong> and details of the locations &#8211; often using a map to display this.<\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.collectorsweekly.com\/cards\/trade-cards\">article in Collectors Weekly<\/a> details the advances in printing that ushered in \u2018a golden age\u2019 in trade cards to advertise everything from long-haul ocean liner travel to sewing kits.<\/p>\n<p>These early versions of Business Cards shared the same characteristics as those used today, providing essential information to do business.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How has Business Card etiquette evolved?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Business Bard etiquette has transformed over centuries. In the 17<sup>th<\/sup> century, it was part of a formal \u2013 almost ceremonial \u2013 exchange to announce the arrival of royalty. By the Victorian era it had become a <strong>tool of commerce<\/strong> and the embryonic, pre-newsprint advertising industry \u2013 powering trade throughout the Industrial Revolution.<\/p>\n<p>The modern Business Card is distributed anytime, anywhere. They\u2019re frequently handed over <strong>before, during or after meetings<\/strong>, at networking events or trade fairs or even simply in a casual setting when it\u2019s relevant and appropriate.<\/p>\n<p>At trade shows and events, Business Cards are often attached to other printed products such as brochures or leaflets, to create a bundle of promotional material.<\/p>\n<p>Simon Cooper, Solopress Managing Director, says the exchange of Business Cards has become a ritual of the business meeting.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They\u2019re a great point of interaction \u2026 a great ice breaker,&#8221; he says.<\/p>\n<p>For Simon, the Business Card sticks in the memory too \u2013 being something you can actually hold in an age where most interactions are virtual.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I will generally remember that I have been handed a card by someone at some point in the past,&#8221; he says. &#8220;I won\u2019t however remember accepting a LinkedIn connection.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>How have Business Card designs changed?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Centuries ago, original and classic designs were based around the <strong>use of calligraphy<\/strong> &#8211; with more ornate versions engraved with gold.<\/p>\n<p>The Victorian age saw advances in printing, with the then-<strong>pioneering lithography<\/strong> ushering in the first wave of Business Card mass production.<\/p>\n<p>Later in the <strong>20<sup>th<\/sup> century <\/strong>and the Business Card had evolved into the format that we still know in the modern day. Contact details, job titles, qualifications \u2013 all packaged into a compact piece of card.<\/p>\n<p>Business Cards have even played their part in popular culture. The famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/print-inspiration\/business-cards-on-screen-the-hits-and-the-misses\/\"><strong>American Psycho<\/strong> Business Card<\/a> scene is well-known, where big city bankers Patrick Bateman, David Van Patten, Timothy Bryce and Paul Allen exchange cards. The fictional characters of the <strong>60s advertising drama Mad Men<\/strong> also got their own Business Cards, as part of a <a href=\"https:\/\/adage.com\/creativity\/work\/scdm-business-cards\/40561\">social media campaign by real-life agency McCann<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Art imitates life <\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The clean, simple designs seen on the McCann\/Mad Men card are still widely used today, showcasing the signature black typeface on white card.<\/p>\n<p>However bold designs are becoming increasingly prevalent.<\/p>\n<p>With ever-increasing competition, the need to stand out from the crowd has seen the rise of more unusual designs.<\/p>\n<p>Some businesses have moved away from the standard rectangular card and are using <strong>interesting shapes<\/strong>, or eye-catching colourful styles.
