{"id":63728,"date":"2019-10-07T15:13:40","date_gmt":"2019-10-07T14:13:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/?p=63728"},"modified":"2019-10-08T14:36:24","modified_gmt":"2019-10-08T13:36:24","slug":"print-accessibility-survey-solopress","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/print-industry-news\/print-accessibility-survey-solopress\/","title":{"rendered":"British businesses \u2018ignoring accessibility in print design\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"bsf_rt_marker\"><\/div><div><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We asked UK businesses whether they consider design accessibility issues when creating print \u2013 and the results show that more businesses are ignoring accessibility compared to those considering it.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than half (56%) of businesses fail to take into consideration <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accessibility needs<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> related to conditions such as dyslexia, colour blindness and early dementia \u2013 according to our survey of 622 UK businesses.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This means over half of all printed marketing materials by British <\/span><b>firms fail to recognise the accessibility needs <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of millions of people in the UK.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it\u2019s not all bad news for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accessible design<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Our research shows that 44% of businesses do consider at least one accessibility issue when creating printed designs. And 60% of firms believe they should take accessibility issues into consideration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response to the findings, we have worked with usability experts to create a set of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accessible design<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> templates \u2013 launched to coincide with Dyslexia Awareness Week 2019 (October 7-13).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our managing director Simon Cooper says \u201cmore education is needed\u201d to highlight the issue of accessibility in design.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>The problem with accessibility<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Up to 21 million people in the UK currently live with visual, cognitive or learning challenges. This includes people with conditions such as dyslexia, as well as those with basic literacy issues.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Government guidelines exist that outline best practice for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/inclusive-communication\/accessible-communication-formats#easy-read-and-makaton\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">creating accessible printed materials<\/a>. These guidelines make recommendations, such as minimum font size, for designing for people with accessibility issues. Organisations like the British Dyslexia Association also publish <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bdadyslexia.org.uk\/advice\/employers\/creating-a-dyslexia-friendly-workplace\/dyslexia-friendly-style-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">guidance on accessibility design<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet 56% of businesses fail to take into consideration accessibility issues related to:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dyslexia \u2013 an estimated<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">6.6 million people in the UK suffer from varying severities of dyslexia, according to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhs.uk\/conditions\/dyslexia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NHS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colour blindness<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2013\u00a0 3 million people are <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.colourblindawareness.org\/colour-blindness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colour blind<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the UK.\u00a0<\/span><b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visual impairments<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8211; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2 million people are living with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sightadvicefaq.org.uk\/newly-diagnosed-registration\/statistics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">visual impairments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which affect their day-to-day life.<\/span> <\/b><\/li>\n<li>Early dementia &#8211; 850,000 people in the UK are currently living with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alzheimers.org.uk\/about-us\/policy-and-influencing\/dementia-uk-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">dementia<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Related disorders (ADHD\/memory issues)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basic literacy issues &#8211; an estimated 8.7 million people in the UK have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/literacytrust.org.uk\/information\/what-is-literacy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">basic literary issues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><b>Why businesses ignore accessibility<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked why their business has failed to take into consideration issues around <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accessible design<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, respondents offered varied responses \u2013 ranging from time constraints to target audience. Nearly half of those asked (46%) said they <\/span><b>simply don\u2019t think about it.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> We\u2019ve listed some further reasons from our findings:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>1% <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said it takes too much time and money<br \/>\n<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<li><b>43% <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said those demographics aren\u2019t our target audience \/ aren\u2019t a large section of our customer base<\/span>\u00a0<\/b><\/li>\n<li><strong>9%<\/strong> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said I don\u2019t know anyone in those demographics<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our research found marketing managers to be the most likely to overlook accessibility. Around two-thirds (62%) said they do not consider those with accessibility needs before approving designs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Companies making a difference <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While many businesses fail to focus on accessibility, there are many that do. Our survey found two-fifths of businesses (44%) are considering accessibility needs when designing print.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When asked why they were making these changes, nearly three-quarters of companies said they want to reach as many people as possible with their printed materials such as posters, flyers and leaflets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Top five reasons businesses consider accessibility<\/b><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They want their materials to be as accessible as possible \u2013 72%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They have friends\/family who are affected by these issues \u2013 28%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They believe their target audience are affected by these issues \u2013 28%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They want to be seen as a forward-thinking company \u2013 27%<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are personally affected by one of these issues \u2013 13%<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This comes at a time when accessibility design is a topical issue. With people increasingly accessing services online, organisations like the <a href=\"https:\/\/gds.blog.gov.uk\/category\/accessibility\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Government Digital Service<\/a> (GDS) have brought public services online, with a focus on creating content that meets user needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Which issues do businesses consider?<\/b><\/h2>\n<div><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among businesses that do consider accessibility issues, it is basic literacy skills that are taken into account most widely (60%). Colour blindness (50%) and Dyslexia (42%) are second and third most frequently considered issues.<\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<h2><b>Affordability of accessibility: Busting the myth<br \/>\n<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A small number of survey respondents expressed concern about the costs and time involved in creating accessible design. But among businesses already <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">designing for accessibility<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 60% said it costs them no extra money to design in this way. We discovered creation of accessible prints costs less than \u00a3100 in 70% of projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Creating accessible design<br \/>\n<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our design templates outline how to create accessible business cards, flyers and posters. We created the templates using government usability guidelines and information from the British Dyslexia Association (BDA).
