It is by no means a new invention.<\/p>\n<p>Since prehistoric times, broken tools would be reused when materials were scarce.<\/p>\n<p>Recycling has been noted in modern civilisation since <a href=\"https:\/\/nerc.org\/news-and-updates\/blog\/nerc-blog\/2019\/11\/19\/a-brief-history-of-recycling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">9<sup>th<\/sup> century Japan<\/a> but the damaging impact that waste has on all life on earth hasn\u2019t truly been understood until now.<\/p>\n<p>Modern day recycling methods have made this process unrecognisable from its humble origins.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Recycling-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-72376\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Recycling-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1136\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With more opportunities to recycle than ever before, why is only 9% of human waste being recycled?<\/p>\n<p>From plastics to phones; glass to organic waste: there\u2019s very little that can\u2019t be disposed of in a responsible manner.<\/p>\n<p>However, despite this unprecedented awareness of the need to recycle, it seems the human race is failing to take its own advice.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/doi\/10.1126\/sciadv.1700782\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A recent study<\/a> revealed that of all the plastic waste humans produce, 79% arrives in landfills or the natural environment, 12% is burned, and as previously mentioned, only 9% is recycled.<\/p>\n<p>Recycling can prevent millions of tons of material from being dumped in landfills. A landfill is the equivalent of sweeping the problem under the carpet:\u00a0 burying and piling up monstrous amounts of trash simply shifts the problem without making it go away.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Under-the-carpet.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-72377\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Under-the-carpet.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1920\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Conversely, recycling benefits society enormously, in more ways than you\u2019d imagine.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><u>Recycling: The good, the bad and the landfills<\/u><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Energy conservation is the single biggest environmental benefit of recycling.<\/p>\n<p>This is because huge volumes of energy are saved reusing a product when compared to the pollution caused when natural resources and raw materials are converted into new products.<\/p>\n<p>Other benefits of recycling include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Reduction of air and water pollution<\/li>\n<li>Reduction of greenhouse gases<\/li>\n<li>Conservation of natural resources<\/li>\n<li>Larger forested land and open space<\/li>\n<li>Less litter and more pristine natural landscapes and wildlife habitats<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Natural-landscape.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-72378\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Natural-landscape.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>However, contamination is the single biggest drawback of recycling.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s caused by us, the consumers.<\/p>\n<p>Equally, this should mean it\u2019s an issue we can overturn.<\/p>\n<p>People with the best intentions can accidentally mix non-recyclables in with their disposable waste, meaning a whole batch of recyclables can become contaminated and therefore unusable.<\/p>\n<p>As we discuss in our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/eco-friendly\/the-ultimate-guide-to-paper-recycling\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ultimate Guide To Paper Recycling<\/a>, a used takeaway pizza box can ruin your week&#8217;s worth of paper and cardboard recycling.<\/p>\n<p>Contamination has several causes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Minimal education about what can be recycled<\/li>\n<li>Different areas being able to recycle different things<\/li>\n<li>Recycling of hazardous items: needles, nappies and pesticides<\/li>\n<li>Food and liquid waste not being clean<\/li>\n<li>Produce that shouldn\u2019t be recycled: plastic bags etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Pizza-box.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-72379\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Pizza-box.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On average, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rubicon.com\/blog\/recycling-contamination-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">25% of recycling is contaminated<\/a>. So, every one in four items recycled is of no use and is automatically discarded at a landfill.<\/p>\n<p>Contaminated recycling effects:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It can send produce straight to a landfill that would have been reused<\/li>\n<li>Separating contaminated waste uses more time, so makes recycling a more expensive procedure<\/li>\n<li>Contamination can disrupt or even break machines, meaning more time is needed to fix them which again makes recycling more expensive<\/li>\n<li>Hazardous waste can expose workers to dangerous working conditions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Unfortunately, modern day recycling has become a sugar-coated term for the journey which the majority of plastic takes on its holiday destination: a landfill.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Landfill1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-72380\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Landfill1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1996\" height=\"1327\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h2><strong><u>Carbon neutral &#8211; Not sitting on the fence<\/u><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Carbon neutrality came to prominence in 2006 when it was declared the Oxford Dictionaries&#8217; favourite word in the US.<\/p>\n<p>Products or services characterised as carbon neutral result in no net release of CO2 into the atmosphere.<\/p>\n<p>To be labelled as carbon neutral, a product or service must do one of two things:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Require no carbon to produce<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>OR<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Offset all carbon released during its lifespan in offset projects<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.greenpeace.org.uk\/news\/the-biggest-problem-with-carbon-offsetting-is-that-it-doesnt-really-work\/#:~:text=What%20is%20carbon%20offsetting%3F,to%20communities%20in%20developing%20countries.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Offsetting is a way of paying others to reduce emissions or absorb CO<sub>2<\/sub> to compensate for your own emissions and cut your carbon footprint.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Tree-planting.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-72381\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Tree-planting.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1322\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Planting trees, building wind farms and cleaning the oceans of plastic are common types of offset projects.<\/p>\n<p>Think of carbon offsetting like a bank who you pay your debt off to.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of debt, however, you\u2019re paying off any carbon you produce by offsetting it somewhere else through an offset project, like the ones we support in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/solopress-news\/solopress-offset-100000-kg-of-co2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brazil and Nicaragua.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Carbon offsetting will absorb huge amounts of CO2 that we humans produce and prevent it from going into our atmosphere.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><u>Getting warmer<\/u><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Most products go from being harvested to the production line, to the end of the line: the customer via delivery service.<\/p>\n<p>Many companies struggle to keep all of these stages of production carbon neutral. This is why carbon offset projects have seen a meteoric rise.<\/p>\n<p>The idea is that, for all the greenhouse gases emitted as the result of manufacturing a product, an equivalent weight of CO2 will be reabsorbed thanks to carbon offsetting products. Ideally, that reabsorption will be achieved within the lifespan of that product.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Carbon-offset-cycle.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-72210\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Carbon-offset-cycle.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mounting global pressure to find solutions to fix, slow and annul climate change has no doubt brought offsetting to prominence more hastily.<\/p>\n<p>After the Paris Agreement and COP26, carbon neutrality is expected to be achieved by all participants to prevent our globe\u2019s temperature from rising by +1.5\u00b0C.<\/p>\n<p>World leaders are now scrambling to meet national and international targets set to prevent temperature\u2019s reaching +1.5\u00b0C.<\/p>\n<p>Some major moves have been promised in the carbon neutral league to prevent this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The UK government plan on Britain being net-zero by 2050.<\/li>\n<li>The UK have banned the production and sale of new diesel cars come 2030<\/li>\n<li>The UN has made a net-zero commitment by 2050<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Net-zero.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-72383\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Net-zero.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1280\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This net-zero commitment by the UN comes as research shows 68% of global emissions come from the ten highest greenhouse gas emitting countries.<\/p>\n<p>Staggeringly, 46% of the total global emissions come from just three places:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>China<\/li>\n<li>The United States of America<\/li>\n<li>The European Union<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, some companies are taking things into their own account.<\/p>\n<p>Apple claims to be run on a carbon neutral basis. By 2030, Apple want every device they sell to have a net-zero climate impact.<\/p>\n<p>Google already claim to have a net-zero climate impact, through their use of carbon offsetting.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><u>Offsetting the peace<\/u><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Carbon offsetting has been characterised as corporate greenwashing by Greenpeace.<\/p>\n<p>They claim fossil fuel burners like BP and Shell as well as the airports like Heathrow and airlines like EasyJet use offsetting as a PR stunt more than anything of substance.<\/p>\n<p>Without reducing their exorbitant emissions and impact on the environment, their offset efforts will have less strength in tackling climate change.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Plane-emissions.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-72384\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Plane-emissions.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1236\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Projects are largely located in developing countries.<\/p>\n<p>Having offset projects in less fortunate communities has a vast list of benefits for everyone involved.<\/p>\n<p>Offsetting projects provide jobs to local communities which improves the economy. They improve vital resources like access to clean drinking water.<\/p>\n<p>They also expand on local infrastructures and preserve biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p>Wind farms, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/solopress-news\/solopress-offset-100000-kg-of-co2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">like the one we support in Brazil<\/a>, offset hundreds of millions of CO2 year on year.
