Any credibility you\u2019d hoped to bring to your article goes flying out of the window.<\/p>\n<p>But how did this happen? Without realising, psychology plays an enormous impact on our internal spellchecker.<\/p>\n<p>There are several tips we\u2019ve found and used that can help you proofread your work to make your print perfect!<\/p>\n<h2><strong>DO sweat the small stuff<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Sweat-the-small-things.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-72537\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Sweat-the-small-things.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1281\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em><strong>Why are typos so obvious once the print job is complete?\u00a0<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>Changing the nature of what you\u2019ve written and how it looks is key to proofreading.<\/p>\n<p>Our brains are programmed to read what we think we wrote and can fail to see our errors as a result.<\/p>\n<p>Tricking your brain into believing it\u2019s reading that copy for the first time, is the ultimate art of proofreading.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The basics<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>To begin\u00a0<strong>proofreading<\/strong>, use your machine, laptop or phone\u2019s spell checker to eliminate\u00a0any simple typos.<\/p>\n<p>Remember to check that your computer has the correct regional language selected i.e. UK vs. US.\u00a0Computers don\u2019t always get it right, so having a printed dictionary to hand will be your perfect partner.<\/p>\n<p>Try reading through your writing in three stages:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Firstly, read the document to see if all the necessary information is there. This could mean dates and times for an event on a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/flyers-leaflets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Flyer <\/a>or thorough explanations of services in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/brochures-booklets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Brochure<\/a>. Either way, make sure it is all there.<\/li>\n<li>Secondly, read the document <strong>aloud<\/strong> to hear how it sounds and see if the sentences make sense. Here, check your past, present and future tense, and ensure you\u2019re not switching between third and first person where it\u2019s not applicable.<\/li>\n<li>Thirdly, check for the <strong>finer details<\/strong>. Double-check your headers and footers as these are normally formatted to stand out. This allows you to see what your work would look like if you published it. This format change always exposes a few small errors that need a quick fix, before anyone sees them!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>6<\/strong> Print on paper<\/h3>\n<p>Reading your copy in a different version on a digital screen, such as on printed paper, can be a valuable trick in spotting those unruly errors. Tricking your brain into thinking it\u2019s reading the final copy can help spot anything lingering on the page.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Proofreading.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-72535\" src=\"https:\/\/www.solopress.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Proofreading.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1044\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>7<\/strong> Change the margins<\/h3>\n<p>Narrow or widen the margins on your page so that the size and length of your paragraphs change. Having your words ordered in a new format can help you see spelling mistakes or errors as it looks like a different piece of work.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>8<\/strong> Grammarly<\/h3>\n<p>Grammarly is the checkmate to proofreading if you want to save time. Download the extension and watch it correct every mistake you make, preventing you from wasting time spotting them yourself.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>9<\/strong> Take time off<\/h3>\n<p>Your eyes might be tired and your brain could be fried. Go out for a walk; take a shower; go to bed. Do something different and come back with a fresh mindset, you\u2019ll be surprised how much more productive you might be.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>10<\/strong> Thank your readers!<\/h3>\n<p>Your readers are your best friends. They read your, hopefully funny, errors and they\u2019ll always point them out for you to fix. Thank them for it, they\u2019re free proofreaders!<\/p>\n<h3>Here are some of the most common mistakes:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Homophones<\/strong>\u2013 these are words which sound the same but have different spelling and meanings. Right and write. Deer and dear.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Leaving out silent letters<\/strong>\u2013 Febuary and February, lisen and listen.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Adding an Ending<\/strong>\u2013 mistakes can be made when changing the tense of a word by adding an ending. Hopeing and Hoping or Submiting and Submitting.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Missing words<\/strong>\u2013 most commonly with smaller words, to, it, is, of, a, etc. Or sometimes these words are used incorrectly in exchange for one another.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ordering of letters<\/strong>\u2013 the most common of typos is for letters to be the wrong way round. For example, it\u2019s weird to spell weird as \u201cwierd\u201d.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Punctuation<\/strong>\u2013 apostrophes are the most common punctuation mistake. They should be used in two ways, for the possessive e.g. Peter\u2019s ball, and to replace missing letters (a contraction) e.g. it\u2019s or don\u2019t.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Amalgamating words<\/strong>\u2013 some words should be separated. For example, \u2018a lot\u2019 rather than \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.co.uk\/2010\/04\/alot-is-better-than-you-at-everything.html\">alot<\/a>\u2018<\/li>\n<li><strong>Verbs<\/strong>\u2013 adapt the verb to a singular or plural subject for example \u2018I was\u2019 and \u2018we were\u2019 not \u2018I were\u2019 and \u2018we was\u2019.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Should of\/should have<\/strong>\u2013 the latter is correct.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Only once the document is free of mistakes and as correct as it can be, is it ready to go to print.
