Whether you’re already celebrating or just in the planning stages, you might want to check out these UK Christmas events.
Some folks may be in the spirit by now. We all know them – the clever mums who have already bought and wrapped their gifts ahead of the holiday rush, the neighbours who had their tree up in mid-November or the couple who booked their Christmas cottage getaway in July and have been counting down ever since. Others aren’t too fussed just yet, and don’t consider it right to put up a tree or start baking until we’re into December, let alone feel excited yet.
Whatever side of the fence you’re in, by now you might be researching and preparing for which Christmas events you should attend – or, at least your kids might be already looking things up online and asking after specifics. Across the UK, many attractions, from historic homes to military museums are preparing for the holidays and hosting fabulous Christmas events. Here are a few you may want to consider.
National Trust Attractions
Wherever you are in the UK, there’s likely to be a National Trust attraction nearby that’s hosting beautiful Christmas event. Featuring many different traditions at historic homes and other locations, they’re fascinating, fun and educational. At Cotehele in Cornwall, gardeners, visitors and volunteers work together to create a 60 foot long garland made of flowers grown on the estate; at Basildon Park, the house is decorated traditionally and a Christmas trail awaits for a wintery walk around the grounds.
Wintery Windsor Castle
Get in the Christmas spirit at the favoured weekend residence of Her Majesty the Queen; Windsor Castle! On Christmas Eve morning, special tours will be held that, amongst other features, include insight into Queen Elizabeth II’s Christmas traditions. This regal way to celebrate the holiday includes exploration of the state apartments and a peek inside Queen Mary’s Dolls House.
Magical Lapland UK
Hailed as truly magical for kids of all ages – and adults, too – Lapland UK is known as “the Rolls Royce of Christmas experiences.” Born out of frustration at a perceived lack of quality UK Christmas events, husband and wife team Mike and Alison Battle created the ultimate recreation of Father Christmas’ home eight years ago. It’s become a popular attraction, drawing guests from across the country.
An Underwater Christmas
And now for something a bit different. If you’d like to go somewhere less traditional this holiday season, why not visit Gosport, Hampshire? There, the Royal Navy Submarine Museum will feature Santa in residence on the HMS Alliance, along with his elves. Toy-making workshops will also be available for those who’d like to try their hand at putting together some holiday gifts.
At the amazing National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh, Christmas “crafternoons” for kids will take place throughout December. You can create gift wrap and learn how to make traditional decorations at this event that’s fun for kids and parents alike. It’s a great opportunity to visit a tremendous museum and keep the kids busy during the holidays.
Caerphilly Christmas Fayre
Of course there are many notable Christmas events taking place across the UK, but Caerphilly is transformed into “shopping paradise” with over 90 different food, drink and craft stalls. Also featured at the fayre are musical acts, entertainment and workshops that are sure to delight. This year’s fayre features a Victorian theme.
Winter Wonderland in Northern Ireland
Antrim Lough Shore Park is set to become a busy hive of holiday activity during the Winter Wonderland celebrations. Santa arrives to his grotto by boat to kick off the festivities, which also feature Christmas music and popular characters, free arts and crafts making for kids and even Christmas themed dance workshops!
Wherever you’re at during the holidays, there is so much going on that you’re likely to be spoiled for choice this Christmas. Whether you prefer something crafty, shopping opportunities, historical sights or a party atmosphere, there are truly UK Christmas events for everyone. It’s time to get in the festive spirit!
